VOLUNTARY TEAM COMMUNITY EFFORT FOR THE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIP

At the Ski Museum: Museum Director - Karin Berg, Art Metal Designer - Trond Nilsen, TV2 Reporter - Sissel Randsborg and Flower Decorator- Jill Lepsøe.

-Could you make a kind of rack to hang the 1000 home-knitted cuffs on? This was the question Trond Nilsen, at the Blacksmith’s Workshop of Oslo Prison, got just one week away from the start of the World Ski Championship in Oslo, Norway. So with eagerly rolled up cuffs himself, experienced as he is, he jumped at the challenge.

This rather unusual question came from Flower Decorator Jill Lepsøe who was awarded the task of making medal bouquets for the winners of the World Championship.  These orange sleeves were to be wrapped around the bouquets and in order to secure enough of them Jill had asked viewers of the ‘God Morgen Norge’ (Good Morning Norway) program on TV2 to participate in a combined knitting exercise!

Wanted to utilize the work operations of Oslo Prison
The result was overwhelming - a veritable flood of sleeves streamed in, all in all 1850 of them, far more than the 140 required! What will we do with the rest? And it is at this point our man from the Blacksmith’s Workshop enters the scene. The problem was presented to Trond and he quickly came up with the idea of the rack for Holmenkollen. The only condition he made was that he was granted the opportunity to utilize Oslo Prison’s operative facilities for the work task.

Less violence
And he exploited positively this opportunity. –The work operations of Oslo Prison are so good that we can manage most challenges, commented Trond Nilsen when being interviewed by TV2. –And if we had managed to employ all inmates the level of violence in the prison would undoubtedly be significantly reduced, he added.

New attraction
-Now we have a new attraction at the Ski Museum where thousands of visitors can see it, commented Karin Berg, Museum Director. Karin liked the project so much that she promised the model would have a permanent place at the Ski Museum.
