THE PRISON CHOIR
- a reality series from Oslo Prison, but with nobody voted out ...

13.07.2007

A practice session in the Auditorium, Department A. The identity of the choir members remains a secret at this stage.

The starting point of this series is a choir composed of inmates who have no previous musical experience. The teacher and conductor is Charlotte Fongen, an Opera Singer who believes that anyone can learn to sing. During a period of two months the choir learns to perform a repertoire of eight choir songs. The goal was to perform them on the prison exercise yard for other inmates.

'Reality' has become a dubious term, but the only thing that has been deliberately composed in this series is the choir itself. And compared to many other reality series no artificial conflicts were created. This is reality with a purpose, where values such as friendship, cooperation and tackling challenges are given top priority. Director Jens Bull comments, -We begin with a choir and watch to see what happens when they do something they have never done before. The goal is to get everyone to strive in the same direction.

The series also has a documentary side where the goal is to describe prison life in a best possible realistic manner. We get to know members of the choir, following them both in their daily prison lives, in the community when on leave, and in other activities they participate in.

The series ends with a huge concert in the exercise yard on Friday 22. June, to loud applause from the other inmates. The Norwegian TV company "TV Norge" has asked us not to publicise the names of the choir participants at this stage, but we will follow up later with a comprehensive illustrated report as soon as we have permission.

The series has been produced by "Nordisk film", with the same team responsible for the popular Norwegian series "Heia Tufte". We doubt whether we can repeat such a huge success, although those who have been fortunate enough to take a secret preview of the first few episodes have provided extremely positive feedback.

The series consists of 10 episodes and will be transmitted by TV Norge during Autumn 2007.
